Be Well With Fresh Flowers

Amid the ongoing concern over COVID-19, many are looking to boost their health any way they can.

Fresh flowers have long been the go-to "get well soon" gift but now more and more research shows that flowers may actually be the perfect way to "stay well."

Not only are fresh flowers beautiful to look at, research from Rutgers University as well as the Society of American Florists has shown that flowers can lower stress, boost your mood, and increase overall well-being. "Stress can wreak havoc on our health," says Mary Nickell, a Wellness Coach in Eureka, CA. "Stress is a normal part of life but when not dealt with we see people get stuck in a cycle (of stress) that leads to poor sleep and a compromised immune system." As mental fatigue and anxiety over coronavirus kicks in, picking up a bunch of fresh tulips may be just as necessary as stocking up on toilet paper and canned foods. 

According to Erin Largo-Wright, Ph.D., who led a study at the University of North Florida which uncovered the impact of flowers on well-being, "Now it is both intuitive and scientifically known that adding elements of nature, like flowers, to interiors promotes well-being." Bring nature indoors is going to become a bigger priority as the CDC continues to urge self-isolation and practicing social distancing. 

For those that find it difficult to stay indoors, fresh flowers may provide the jolt of motivation they need to skip happy hour. Research has found that being around flowers increases the level of compassion we feel for others and that when surrounded by flowers we are more willing to extend a helping hand to those in need. Pick up or order in a fresh bouquet for your coffee table and hunker down for a long week of Netflix because we are all in this together.
